Science 08, version 04 (Print)

Science 8 meets all the learning outcomes of the Ministry of Education's IRP. Science 8 offers exploration of life, physical, and earth sciences through hands-on activities, topic exploration, and informal and formal assessment. It is designed for self-paced independent learners as well as students in regular classrooms. The course is written for use with either Nelson's BC Science Probe 8 OR McGraw-Hill Ryerson's BC Science 8 textbook. Course modules, and sections within the modules, may be taken in any order, as each is independent of the others.

Each of the four modules of Science 8 has two tests available. In addition to these, each module contains an optional project that can be done in lieu of the tests. This allows teachers flexibility in assessment as well as promoting a more active, hands-on approach to science. This learning-by-doing approach is also presented in the many "Try it Out" activities throughout the course. These activities enable students to be active learners by making scientific connections and applying concepts.

A companion module to the course is the Science Orientation Skills (SOS) Package. This package presents key concepts in the study of science such as scientific literacy, methodology, and safety as well as guidelines and examples of practical items including lab reports, research strategies and formulas. It can be used throughout grades 8 and 9 as a reference manual as well as a teaching tool.
